Tata Aeris I-CNG

Looking for a sedan that offers the practicality of CNG without compromising on modern features? Tata Motors has introduced the new Tata Aeris, which could be an alternative to the Tata Tigor. The sedan comes with both petrol and CNG powertrain options, but the Tata Aeris iCNG is the one we will focus on here. So, what makes this CNG sedan special, and what does it offer to buyers? Let’s take a closer look.

Design and Exterior

The Tata Aeris features a modern design with a sloping roofline, signature LED headlamps and DRLs, and connected LED tail lamps on selected variants. The Pure+, Creative and Accomplished iCNG variants get R14 Dynamic Hyperstyle wheels, while the Accomplished variant offers a dual-tone black roof. The available colour options include Dandeli Drizzle, Dune Glow, Nitro Crimson, Pure Grey, Daytona Grey and Pristine White. Colour availability varies by variant.

  • Smart and Pure: The brochure does not list the signature LED headlamps or Infinity LED connected tail lamps as standard features.
  • Pure+: R14 Dynamic Hyperstyle wheels.
  • Creative: Signature LED headlamps, DRLs, Infinity LED connected tail lamps and R14 Dynamic Hyperstyle wheels.

Note: R15 Diamond Aero alloy wheels are available only on the specified petrol variants, not the CNG.

Dimensions, Fuel Capacity and Tyres

Interior, Comfort and Infotainment

In terms of features and comfort Tata Aeris CNG offers a digital instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and multiple charging options. The Pure+ variant gets a 20.32 cm touchscreen, while Creative and higher variants offer a larger 26.03 cm HD touchscreen. The Accomplished variant adds ventilated leatherette front seats, wireless phone charging and iRA connectivity with 35+ connected-car features. Other available features include rear AC vents, a rear centre armrest with cupholders, a height-adjustable driver seat and a cooled glove box, depending on the variant.

Safety Features

Safety remains a top priority for Tata Motors, and the Tata Aeris CNG combines standard passenger safety features with dedicated CNG protection systems. Depending on the variant, it offers six airbags, ABS with EBD and CSC, ESP with traction control, hill-hold control, ISOFIX child-seat mounts and advanced camera systems. Its CNG safety features include leak detection with automatic switching to petrol mode and thermal incident protection.

CNG-Specific Safety Features

The Tata Aeris iCNG comes with a CNG leak detection system that automatically switches the engine to petrol mode if a gas leak is detected. Its iCNG kit uses materials tested across different temperatures and pressures to help prevent leakage. The car also includes a fire extinguisher beneath the co-driver’s seat. In case of a thermal incident, the system cuts off the CNG supply to the engine and releases gas from the cylinder through a special nozzle.

Tata Aeris iCNG Engine And Performance

The Tata Aeris CNG is powered by a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Revotron petrol engine with a displacement of 1,199 cc. In CNG mode, it produces 75.5 PS of power at 6,000 rpm and 96.5 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. The engine comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT, depending on the variant. One key advantage is its direct start in CNG mode, which allows the car to start directly on CNG without needing to start in petrol mode first. This adds convenience for daily users and helps reduce unnecessary petrol consumption.

Tata Aeris iCNG Mileage and Range

Tata has not yet officially confirmed the mileage figures for the Aeris CNG. However, during our driving test, it delivered around 25–30 km/kg. The actual mileage depends on several factors, including traffic conditions, driving style, vehicle speed and AC usage. Mileage may be lower in heavy city traffic, while maintaining a steady speed on open roads can help achieve better fuel efficiency.

Tata Aeris CNG Price in India: Variant-Wise

According to the latest research, the Tata Aeris iCNG starts at ₹6.29 lakh and goes up to ₹9.74 lakh (ex-showroom). It is available in five variants, with the AMT option offered from the Pure variant onwards. On-road prices vary by city, insurance and registration charges.

Key Rivals:

The Tata Aeris iCNG competes with the Maruti Suzuki Dzire S-CNG and Hyundai Aura Hy-CNG in the Indian sedan market. Both rivals offer factory-fitted CNG options, making them alternatives for buyers looking for better fuel efficiency and lower running costs.  Choose the Tata Aeris CNG for its features, higher power and CNG-AMT convenience. Pick the Dzire S-CNG if maximum claimed mileage matters most. Consider the Aura Hy-CNG if its features and pricing better suit your needs.

Key differences: The Tata Aeris CNG offers higher CNG power than both rivals and uses twin underfloor cylinders to preserve boot space. The Dzire S-CNG has the highest claimed mileage, while the Hyundai Aura Hy-CNG uses a four-cylinder engine. The Aeris also offers an AMT option and the lowest starting price among these three CNG sedans.

Final Verdict: Should You Buy the Tata Aeris iCNG?

The Tata Aeris iCNG is a strong option for buyers looking for an affordable CNG sedan with modern features, comfortable ride quality and lower running costs. Compared with the Maruti Suzuki Dzire S-CNG and Hyundai Aura Hy-CNG, the Aeris offers higher CNG power at 75.5 PS, a feature-rich cabin and a twin-cylinder CNG setup designed to preserve luggage space. Its biggest advantage is the availability of an AMT gearbox with CNG, making city driving easier.
