In September 2026, an interesting sale of cars took place in India where the Maruti Suzuki Baleno became the top-selling car of the country. The Tata Nexon remains in third place with 13,831 sales, while the Tata Punch is fourth with 5,686 sales. Maruti Suzuki also improves its ranking with six places in the top 10 rankings.
The new numbers show more than just sales rankings. The Baleno shows an all-time high demand whereas the Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Dzire indicate year-on-year drop in demand. Meanwhile, the Tata Punch is on the path to outpace the Nexon, as the latter is just 123 units behind the pocket-friendly car. In September 2026, the top 10 models had a combined 1,91,332 units which represents a 15.45% YoY growth.

Year-on-Year (YoY) Sales Comparison: September 2026 vs September 2025
The year-on-year comparison shows how each model performs against the same month last year. Six cars in the top 10 record positive growth, while four models report lower sales.

Key YoY Highlights
Maruti Suzuki Baleno sees the maximum number of positive gains.
The Baleno is the largest sale this month in September 2026. In September 2025, its sales increased from 13,173 to 25,392, which accounts for growth of almost 93%.This shows the biggest absolute growth from the top 10 models, with an increase of 12,219 units.
Tata Punch continues to make a significant move.
The Tata Punch has booked 20,333 units, a 28% increase from a year ago. It is at a much closer grid to Tata Nexon, with 123 units separating the two models in September 2026.
The Maruti Fronx and Ertiga give a solid bump up.
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx accounts for a 40.1% increase in sales to 19,282 units. Their sales have surged up 39.6 percent to 16,911, with the Ertiga performing well, too. There is excellent demand for both practical and family vehicles.
Maruti Dzire faces the biggest percentage decline
The Dzire records 17,754 units, down 11.4% from 20,038 units a year earlier. The Tata Nexon also sees a drop of 9.4% while the Hyundai Creta and Mahindra Scorpio, get a smaller dip respectively.
Key MoM Highlights

The month-on-month gain is greatest for the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. Factual sales go up (+61.3%) by 9,646 units compared with August. The surge is enough to propel the hatchback to the race-winning status in September. Tata Nexon saw a growth of 11 percent, while Mahindra Scorpio got 11.2 percent bump. The Hyundai Creta also withers by 8.4%, showing the relatively good quality of deliveries for these SUVs, relative to August.
The Fronx grows by a small 2.9% from 18,730 to 19,282 units over August and September. Only one model besides Baleno has positive growth both YoY and MoM, while The Swift has dropped 12.3% month-on-month and dispatches dropped by 2,433 units. The Ertiga, Wagon R and Tata Punch also see a drop in their monthly figures.
Why Is the Maruti Suzuki Baleno Leading Car Sales?
The unrivaled highlight of September 2026 is the Baleno’s performance. With its 25,392 units, its performance put it 4,936 units ahead of the second placed Tata Nexon. The strong numbers coincide with the arrival of the facelifted Baleno. Its combination of hatchback practicality, a premium positioning within the segment and the Maruti Suzuki ownership network helps it remain relevant to buyers looking for a city-friendly car.
However, the latest dispatch figures alone do not establish how much of the increase comes from fresh customer demand, dealer inventory changes or the facelift launch. Retail registration data and future monthly results will help determine whether this growth continues.
What is the new trend of sales in September 2026?
The latest rankings show that Indian buyers continue to support a mix of hatchbacks, compact SUVs, sedans and family-oriented MPVs. With six models on the list, Maruti Suzuki is leading the way with models such as Baleno, Fronx, Wagon R, Dzire, Swift and Ertiga. These models on the whole have about 60.4% share in the top 10 share during September.
Tata Motors also maintains a strong presence through Nexon and Punch. Both models cross 20,000 units, although the Nexon experiences a year-on-year decline. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Creta and Mahindra Scorpio remain among the country’s leading high-volume SUV nameplates.
This is a significant difference between YoY and MoM. YoY growth is based on performance compared to the same month of the previous year, and MoM growth is applied to the immediate direction of dispatches. A car may have positive YOY growth without actually showing any growth month to month as the Wagon R has done.
